Egypt’s FM urges quick resumption of int’l community’s economic support to Sudan

CAIRO – 30 March 2022: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry affirmed the need for the international community to quickly resume all forms of economic support to Sudan in a way that enables the Sudanese people to face the current economic challenges.

Shoukry’s remarks were made as he met on Wednesday with head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) Volker Perthes, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read.

Egypt’s top diplomat affirmed the necessity of mobilizing international aid to support Sudan during the current critical period. He also affirmed Egypt’s commitment to resume the efforts to support Sudan in all fields.

Sudan’s security and stability is an integral part of those of Egypt, Shoukry told Perthes, taking into consideration the firm historic relations, the strong brotherly ties binding the two countries, and the single destiny that the peoples of the two Nile Basin countries share.

Perthes briefed Shoukry on the results of recent efforts within the framework of the UN initiative to facilitate dialogue in Sudan.

In this regard, Shoukry affirmed Egypt's support for all efforts aimed at preserving the safety and stability of Sudan with the need for these efforts to be based on the Sudanese national priorities and visions.

Shoukry confirmed Egypt's confidence in Sudan's ability to overcome the current political and economic challenges and advance the national interest in order to preserve the cohesion of the Sudanese state and its institutions.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held discussions on Wednesday with Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in a meeting in Egypt.

The meeting came within the framework of the brotherly, historic, and strong relations that gather Egypt and Sudan and the common destiny that they share, a joint statement by the two countries read.

Discussions held between Sisi and Burhan was followed by a session of expanded talks that gathered the delegations of the two countries.

A spirit of cordiality and brotherhood has prevailed during the discussions, which reflects the deep and special relations between the two sisterly countries, the statement said.

The two sides discussed a number of issues, including the need to enhance economic cooperation, boost trade exchange, maximize efforts of achieving agricultural integration and rail and power linkage, and deepen the joint cooperation between the two countries on the security and military levels.

They also stressed the need for reaching a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
