CAIRO – 28 March 2022: Officials at the Ministry of Transportation told an European Investment Bank (EIB) delegation that the local production of bus-rapid-transit (BRT) vehicles has begun, a press statement indicated Monday.

The introduction of the BRT has been made possible through the ongoing expansion of the Ring Road connecting Greater Cairo together. That is because there will be seven lanes in each direction, so as one will be allocated to the BRT, while the rest will be used by passenger cars.

The ministry had announced in December that six BRT stations will be established on the Ring Road's major intersections, given that microbuses, which park randomly on the side for passengers to get on and off, will be banned from using the road to reduce crowdedness.

The purpose of the EIB's delegation is checking on the progress of the projects the establishment is financing. Those are the development of the first and second metro lines, introduction of the third line, rehabilitation of Raml tramway, transforming Abou Qir railway into an electric metro line, upgrading of the signaling system of Tanta/Mansoura/Damietta rail line, and doubling of the railway distance between Mansoura and Damietta.
