CAIRO – 12 March 2022: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, President-designate of UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (UNFCCC COP 27) had a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in a statement.

The call tackled the ongoing efforts in preparation for the upcoming COP session, which will be hosted and presided by Egypt this year, Hafez said.

"In this context, the UN Secretary-General affirmed the support of the United Nations system for Egyptian efforts in a manner that contributes to enhancing international action to combat climate change at all levels," he added.

The priority issues of climate action were also discussed during the call. The two sides also agreed to continue consultation and coordination in this regard during the coming period, Hafez continued.

On January 19, 2022, Shoukry y received a phone call from the Secretary-General of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Patricia Espinosa to discuss preparations for COP27 Egypt is hosting later this year.

Espinosa congratulated Shokry on assuming the presidency of the coming conference of the parties (COP), scheduled for November 7-18 in Sharm El Sheikh.

In turn, Minister Shokry pointed out Egypt's priorities on climate change mentioned previously by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.  Those are the reduction of emissions, mitigation of the impact of climate change, and securing climate funding to developing countries, particularly Africa as it is the most impacted by the phenomenon.

The Egyptian minister of foreign affairs and COP26 President Alok Sharma had met Saturday in Cairo to examine opportunities of cooperation over combating climate change.
