CAIRO – 12 March 2022: Egyptian Ambassador to Canada Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, received the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Mr. David Cohen, where the two sides discussed the rapid developments in the international scene.

Both sides also emphasized the stable and well-established Egyptian-American partnership over many years.

The two diplomats also exchanged assessments regarding relations with Canada and Canada's role in the international arena.

This came during Egypt's participation, within the framework of its membership in the international coalition against ISIS, in the first meeting of the coalition's sub-group on Africa, which was held over two days in Rome.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated - on its official page on Facebook that the meeting comes in connection with the coalition's interest in strengthening efforts to confront the arms of ISIS, whose activities have grown in various regions of Africa during the recent period, as it witnessed a wide participation on the part of African countries and partners.

During his participation in the meeting, the Director of the International Counter-Terrorism Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Fouad stressed the importance of respecting the principle of national ownership of the anti-terrorist programs applied in African countries, which is why the technical support provided by partners must be consistent with the goals and priorities of those programs in a way that helps their implementation.

He also reviewed the most important technical assistance programs provided by the concerned Egyptian authorities in this regard, foremost of which is that provided by the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development in cooperation with the Ministries of Defense and Interior to enhance the capabilities of African countries in the areas of combating terrorism.

He highlighted the training programs organized by the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding during 2021, with the participation of experts from 24 African countries, on the topics of combating extremist ideology leading to terrorism, immunizing society from extremism, and rehabilitation and integration.

He also highlighted the distinguished role played by religious institutions, especially Al-Azhar and Dar Al-Ifta, to refute extremist discourse and introduce the true religion, especially through the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism, which monitors and refutes deviant fatwas using legal evidence, and publishes its publications on the Internet in 13 languages.
