CAIRO – 11 March 2022: Egypt and Qatar held talks in Cairo on Thursday to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and regional issues, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

This comes as Assistant Egyptian Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Alaa Moussa received Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh, Assistant Qatari Foreign Minister for Regional Affairs at the headquarters of the Egyptian ministry.

The two sides discussed aspects of bilateral relations and means of boosting them, the statement said. They also discussed regional issues and topics of mutual concern.

Cairo and Doha have restored diplomatic relations in January last year by signing Al-Ula reconciliation agreement between Qatar and the Gulf states during the 41st GCC summit in Saudi Arabia.

The agreement ended more than three years of rift between Qatar and the quartet of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain.

Since then, Egypt and Qatar have held rounds of bilateral talks to enhance the bilateral relations.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, since then, have also met with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani several times, the last of which was in February this year on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Both leaders met, on 28 August 2021, for the first time in more than four years since severing ties between Egypt and Qatar in 2017. Their first meeting was held on the sidelines of the “Baghdad Cooperation and Partnership’ conference.

They met for the second time on the sidelines of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

On June 15, 2021, President Sisi sent an invitation to Prince Tamim to visit Egypt at the earliest opportunity, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Also in June, Sisi appointed Amr El-Sherbini as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Qatar, while the Qatari Emir appointed Salem bin Mubarak bin Shafi Al Shafi as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
