CAIRO – 7 March 2022: As appointed president of COP27, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry attended Sunday the event organized by the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) to discuss the upcoming summit to be hosted in Sharm El Sheikh in November.

In his speech, Minister Shokry underscored that combating climate change is no longer the responsibility of governments exclusively. Rather, all stakeholders must be involved, including the business community by expanding reliance on renewable energy, and switching into green economy, he added.

On that front, Shokry showcased that Egypt already has the political willpower and the suitable legislative framework to enable that orientation.

The minister of foreign affairs noted that the current year is crucial for Egyptian-British cooperation over climate change, given that COP27 will be building upon the outcomes of COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021.

In a similar context, the minister lauded the role assumed by the association in consolidating trade ties between Egypt and the United Kingdom, expressing aspiration that the event would support ongoing preparations to hold COP27.

Similarly, Minister Shokry presented existing cooperation between Egypt and the United Kingdom in the realm of climate change, both multilaterally on the international scale, such as co-chairing the Adaptation Action Coalition, and unilaterally in the form of British investments in various sectors in Egypt, particularly in that of renewable energy.
