CAIRO - 21 January 2022: South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his accompanying delegation, who is currently visiting Egypt, inspected the third line of Cairo Metro, on Friday, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Transport.
 
The President’s tour began in the central interchange station of Adly Mansour, which locates within an integrated transport complex and a commercial investment 15-acre area, the statement said.
 
This area would include a station for the light rail transit (LRT), a railway station “Cairo - Suez” and a superjet station, in addition to Bus rapid transit (BRT) “Adly Mansour - El Salam,” the statement added.
 
The Korean President was briefed on the third link of the Cairo Metro, which connects the west with the east of Greater Cairo, with a length of 41.2 km and 34 stations.
 
Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel El Wazir has discussed the cooperation with the South Korean government and its contribution to the implementation of metro projects. 
 
The Egyptian government has signed congrats with the Korean Hyundai Rotem Company to manufacture and supply 32 air-conditioned trains for the third line, in addition to 8 years of maintenance and a major overhaul. The contract value is EGP 640 million, besides  317.7 million euros that would be financed by the Korean government.
 
When the train of Moon’s tour entered the workshop of a major overhaul, the largest workshop in the Middle East, the Minister reviewed workshop’s buildings, which were built on 65 acres, as it contains 32 buildings where heavy and light overhaul is being undergone.
 
During the period from 2015 to 2017,  the South Korean company had manufactured and supplied 20 air-conditioned trains for the first line of Cairo Metro (Helwan-El Marg); Eleven trains were manufactured at Hyundai Rotem Company in South Korea and 9 trains were assembled at the Egyptian  Railway Equipment Factory (SEMAF). The Korean company is currently carrying out maintenance work for 8 years. The maintenance work started after the expiry of the two-year warranty period for each train.
