Merck's COVID-19 pill to be available in Egypt’s hospitals in 3 weeks: Health Ministry

CAIRO – 17 January 2022: Spokesman for the Health Ministry Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said that Egypt will receive the first batch of Coronavirus oral medicine on January 21.

In a televised statement, Abdel Ghaffar explained that the doses expected to arrive in Egypt from January 21 to January 27 will cover up to 50K patients.

Merck's COVID-19 pill, which is one of the expected medicines will be available in hospitals within three weeks, Abdel Ghaffar said.

Earlier this month, Egypt’s Ministry of Health announced, that the government managed to sign a contract for importing new Coronavirus oral medicine, expected to arrive in Egypt in January.

Abdel Ghaffar said that the international health organizations such as the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicine Agency approved new kinds of COVID-19 medicine including an oral administration drug where the substance is taken by mouth.

In televised statements, Abdel Ghaffar noted that the first batch expected to arrive Egypt this month.

Nearly 60 days after the clinical trials for COVI-VAX, Egypt’s first coronavirus vaccine, kicked off, Dr. Osama Azmy, the head of the Clinical Trials committee at the National Research Center revealed the health status of the volunteers, and the steps to approve the vaccine.

Dr. Azmy assured that the health condition of the first volunteers, who received the first dose of the Egyptian vaccine, in the first clinical trial phase is stable, and did not witness any side effects that would harm their health.

He explained that there is continuous communication with the Egyptian medicines authority in order to complete the stages of clinical trials for Egyptian coronavirus vaccine on volunteers.

He added that the clinical trials on the first volunteers proved to a large extent the efficacy of the vaccine, in addition to the fact that the volunteers did not show any symptoms.
