US supports Libya's efforts to hold elections

CAIRO - 11 January 2022: The US stressed support for Libya's efforts to reach a political resolution to the conflict, after the presidential elections scheduled for December 24 was postponed.


In a series of tweets on the Twitter feed of the US Embassy in Libya, US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland said during his meeting with Libya's President of the High Council of State (HCS) Khaled al Mishri that he voiced his country's support for Libya's efforts aiming to hold the presidential elections, after it was postponed in December.

Al Mishri, meanwhile, said that around 3 million Libyans are ready to cast their votes in the elections, adding that efforts are being exerted with the parliament in order to agree on a road map in this respect.

The US embassy in Libya welomed the arrival of the Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Stephanie Williams in Tripoli to support holding presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.


In a Tweet on December 13, the US embassy in Libya reiterated the US' full support to Libyans in their pursuit to fair presidential and parliamentary elections.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Stephanie Williams of the United States as his Special Adviser on Libya on Dec 6.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said William willl lead good offices and mediation efforts and engagements with Libyan regional and international stakeholders to implement the three intra-Libyan dialogue tracks - political, security and economic - and support the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.
