CAIRO - 16 November 2021: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that focusing on the intellectual and ideological dimensions are the most important axes of the comprehensive approach adopted by Egypt to fight terrorism.

During his chairmanship of an African Peace and Security Council (PSC) session on combating extremist thoughts and the financing of terrorism, Shoukry also stressed the importance of security, economic, social and cultural dimensions to combat terrorism.

He further cited President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's initiative to renew religious discourse to be consistent with the upright religious teachings, said Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Ahmed Hafez.

In his speech at the session, Shoukry said that discussing the issue of combating extremist thoughts and the financing of terrorism by the PSC came in line with decisions taken at the PSC's session on January 27,2018, under President Sisi's chairmanship of the council.

He added that the participants in the 2018 session stressed the importance of outlining a national strategy to combat extremist thoughts.

Shoukry also underlined the necessity of urgent and serious cooperation between African countries and regional and international institutions to address the close relationship between terrorist financing and other forms of financial crimes.

In this regard, Shoukry said Egypt adopted a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework to combat terrorist financing, adding that this has contributed to undermining the activities of terrorist groups in Egypt.

Egypt attached great importance to cooperation with brotherly African countries to build human and institutional capacities in the relevant fields, he said.

He also underlined efforts exerted by Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) and along with the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combating Unit (EMLCU), which provides technical support to African countries to help halt terrorist financing operations.
