UN official lauds Egypt's efforts on limiting climate change impacts

CAIRO - 1 November 2021: Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN‐Habitat) Maimunah Sharif has praised Egypt's efforts on mitigating the disasters and repercussions of climate change and reducing emissions.


Speaking at a celebration held in Luxor to mark the World Cities Day, she reiterated on Sunday that the organization of this event aims to develop cities to change them into better places by June 2022.

The official expressed her pleasure at Luxor’s hosting of the Global Observance of the World Cities Day for this year.

Sharif pointed out to the initiatives and projects launched by the Egyptian government to address the climate change phenomenon, including the presidential initiative of Decent Life, asserting that Egypt is a key player in this field.

She highlighted Egypt’s powerful program launched in 2014 to move towards new and renewable energy, noting that cities shall be re-planned and re-managed in a way that guarantees their sustainability.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi headed Sunday to the United Kingdom to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26 summit) held in Glasgow on October 31-November 12.

The meetings of heads of state within the conference are taking place on Sunday and Monday.

Spokesperson of the Presidency Bassam Rady stated that the president will focus on climate change topics relevant to developing countries in general, and to African states in specific.

President is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with a number of chiefs of state, including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
