'Tolerance' main value stressed by Grand Imam, Egyptian president in Mawled Nabawi ceremony

CAIRO – 17 October 2021: The Ministry of Endowments held Sunday a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Prophet Mohamed known as Mawled Nabawi at Al Manara Conference Center.

 

The event was attended by Al Azhar Sheikh and Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hanafi al-Gebali, and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli.

 

Delivering the opening speech, Minister of Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa asserted the importance of abiding by the core values of religion, and ignoring the ideas promoted by extremist groups.

Further, Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb tackled the issue of civil wars happening under the pretext of imposing Sharia. The Grand Imam condemned that ill thinking lamenting the souls lost because of such conflicts. Al Azhar Sheikh also pointed out that such terrorist acts fuel Islamophobia.

 

After concluding his speech, the Grand Imam gifted President Sisi with a Moshaf.

 

Later, President Sisi honored scholars in Islamic religious studies for their contributions in enriching the discipline's literature. The honored academics are from Egypt, Sudan, and South Sudan.

 

Before beginning his speech, the president greeted veteran Islamic academic Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem.

 

The chief of state noted that the message of Islam values Knowledge and science, and that the first word in Qoran is “read.”

 

The president warned against decontextualization of religious texts with the aim of propagating destructive ideas. He also asserted the necessity of furthering tolerance, diversity in terms of religions and creeds, and reform of religious discourse.

 

President Sisi added that the principles of Islam include coexistence, social peace and people’s right in a decent life.
