CAIRO - 9 October 2021: Former Libyan foreign minister Mohammed al Dairi said Egypt is playing an effective role to resolve the Libyan crisis.

In an interview with MENA on Friday, he praised Egypt's wise political leadership, underlining that Cairo’s goal is to support the Libyan people's unity and sovereignty over their lands.

For several years, Libya had suffered from foreign interference until Libyans felt that the decision-making in Libya is in the hands of foreign parties and powers, Dairi added.

He further noted that the progress, which was made by the first Berlin Conference on Libya, particularly after reaching a ceasefire in June 2020, has been hampered by foreign parties that seek to control the decision-making in Libya.

The Libyan public opinion is still calling for holding the presidential elections as scheduled in December to contribute to reaching stability in the country, he added.

A number of states, topped by Egypt, are seeking to resolve the current Libyan crisis, the diplomat said. However, several regional states are pressing on Libyan parties loyal to them to hinder the political process in the country, he made it clear.

Libya lives a glimmer of hope to get out of the dark tunnel it has been going through for years after reaching ceasefire between warring parties last year.

On March 16, power was handed over from the former presidential council to the new one, and from the 2014 Government of National Accord (GNA) to the Government of National Unity (GNU), which is supposed to pave the way for holding elections on December 24.

On March 15, the GNU members and prime minister took the oath of office before the Tobruk-based House of Representatives.

Egypt and other Arab and western countries have affirmed the need to stick to the roadmap set by Libyans and hold the Libyan general elections on December 24 as planned.
