CAIRO – 24 September 2021: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry affirmed on Friday the need for holding the Libyan elections as scheduled as a step to consolidate stability in Libya.

In a statement published by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Shoukry affirmed the importance Egypt attaches to the stability of the situations in Libya.

Shoukry’s remarks came in a meeting for countries neighboring Libya in New York on the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Egyptian foreign minister highlighted the role assigned to the neighboring countries to Libya to support efforts to achieve comprehensive settlement.

He affirmed that this settlement should preserve the Libyan wealth and protect the sovereignty of the country away from foreign interference.

On Monday, Shoukry held a meeting with President of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Menfi, where they discussed the developments in the Libyan situation.

They also discussed pushing forward a comprehensive political settlement, Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said on Twitter.

They discussed building on the progress the bilateral relations between Egypt and Libya have witnessed, Hafez said.

Shoukry’s visit to New York on the sidelines of the UNGA has included his participation in a number of activities with the aim of presenting Egypt’s vision and stances on the current issues and situations in the region.

Egypt’s top diplomat also met on the sideline of his participation with high-level officials at the UN.

He also held bilateral meetings during his visit with a large number of foreign ministers participating in the UNGA session, in order to discuss aspects of bilateral cooperation with those countries.

The ministers held consultations on the most prominent regional and international issues and ways of coordination regarding common challenges.

Shoukry's meetings aim to explain the achievements made at the national level in various aspects of political, economic and social work and how to build on them in order to promote common interests with friendly countries and international partners.
