CAIRO – 16 August 2021: Regional Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Dr. Basil Al-Khatib praised the performance of Egypt’s industrial sector as the country’s leadership puts great effort to develop heavy industries.

"Egypt is one of the largest countries with an industrial sector in the region, and its economic growth rate is very large compared to the countries of the region,” he said.

The UN official explained that the Egyptian government is working to train human capabilities, open areas for investment, and support industrial policies and frameworks that govern the future industrial sector plan.

The UN official pointed out that the industrial development in Egypt is witnessing a new stage through the manufacture of electric cars to be 100 percent Egyptian made, as well as what was witnessed in the import of machines for the manufacture of railcars, which is an important and strong step for Egypt to become a pioneer in the industrial sector worldwide and not only regional.

“Egypt has the largest manufacturing base in the region, and statistics indicate that the value added of the manufacturing sector in Egypt is 15.9 percent of GDP, which is the largest percentage in the region. Algeria is 4 percent,” the UN official said.

He added that the Egyptian state has to work on industries with high added value, in addition to the existing industries, which are industries with low and medium added value.
