CAIRO – 7 July 2021: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said his meetings and phone calls with his Chinese and Russian counterparts come as part of Egypt’s efforts to explain its position ahead of the Security Council session on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Shoukry told Extra News T.V. channel that he has been presenting the goals that Egypt wants from the session.

During these meetings, the permanent cooperation at multiple levels and mutual support between Egypt and Russia and Egypt and China have been acclaimed, Shoukry said.

He added that “these matters have many aspects and complexities that we must bear in mind. There has been an interest in acclamation and in these relations, as well as the existing solidarity to produce fruitful outcomes during the Security Council session.”

While his contacts with Russia and China took place on Tuesday, on Wednesday Shoukry continued his intensive meetings with members of the Security Council. He met with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, T. S. Tirumurt, to explain Egypt and Sudan’s worries about the dam.

He also met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to stress the international community’s responsibility for contributing to resolving the situation of the GERD and avoiding a dangerous precedent in violating international norms regulating international rivers.
