CAIRO – 5 July 2021: Sudan’s Irrigation Minister Yasser Abbas said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue has become a threat to the regional security and peace, expecting the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take into consideration Sudan’s demands in this regard.

The 15-member council is expected to convene this week to discuss the GERD dispute between Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt over the mega dam Ethiopia builds on the Blue Nile.

Abbas in a press conference said Khartoum has accepted the international mediation in the GERD issue and that the Security Council will discuss the GERD issue under the article no. 6.

Omar Al-Farouk, the Sudanese government spokesperson on GERD, said his country has not rejected the Ethiopian right in utilizing its water resources.

He affirmed, however, the need for reaching a final legally-binding solution to GERD.

Farouk called on the Security Council to put the GERD issue under observation and to receive periodical reports on it every six months.

Farouk said the second filling is around the corner, stressing that Sudan has many political, economic and diplomatic options that will be announced at the time.
