CAIRO - 3 June 2021: Egypt’s first unit of gender equality and women economic empowerment was inaugurated on Thursday by Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saafan in the city of Ismailia, MENA reported.

“Egypt is considered one of the first countries to establish a gender equality unit and has become a relevant model to follow among the world’s countries,” Saafan was quoted as saying.

“Egypt’s first gender equality unit was established in early 2019 and was later generalized to all manpower directorates nationwide in 2020,”  he added.

Two months ago, the Ministry of International Cooperation’s 2020 Annual Report cited that 34 projects, worth $3.3 billion, are being executed to achieve the targets of gender equality.

Also, Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, issued in February 2021 a decision No. 9 of 2021 establishing the Equal Opportunities Unit in the Ministry headed by Dr. Shaima Serraj.

In his speech on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration on women’s rights at the United Nations General Assembly in October 2020, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said that Egypt has been taken steps to achieve gender equality and empower women, which represent half of the society.
