CAIRO – 18 April 2021: Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry embarked on Sunday on an African tour to update several countries on the developments of the Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue.

Shoukry headed to Kenya and will go next to Comoros, South Africa, Congo, Senegal and Tunisia with messages from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to his counterparts.

Ahmed Hafez, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement that the visits are based on Egypt’s keenness on informing the African nations about the reality of the GERD negotiations.

He added that Egypt is keen on achieving a legally-binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam in a manner that takes the interests of the three countries into account prior to the second filling phase and any unilateral actions.

Hafez emphasized the Egyptian position that calls for launching a serious and effective negotiation that would result in the desired agreement.
