CAIRO – 11 April 2021: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi held Sunday a meeting with a number of senior officials to follow up on the measures taken to localize manufacturing electric vehicles and feeding industries instructing them not to make the manufacturing processes restricted to assembling.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Consultant to the President for National and Strategic Projects Sherif Ismail; Minister of Public Enterprise Hisham Tawfik; Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea; Minister of State for Military Production Mohamed Ahmed Morsi; and Chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization Abdel Moneim al-Taras.

Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady said the president reiterated the importance of raising the percentage of local components in the final product. The president also discussed with the officials possibilities of cooperating with international companies in the field to make room for experience and modern technology transfer.

In March, Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawy stated that the electric vehicle charging stations shall be located in public and private parking lots in Greater Cairo. That was in a meeting with Public Enterprise Minister Hisham Tawfik.

Shaarawy added that private operators have to return the place into its original status after installing the charging units, and that they have to be in charge of securing them and not the municipalities.

The minister of public enterprise underlined that the private sector is required to install and operate 3,000 dual charging units within three years. He added that the Ministry of Electricity will introduce the necessary infrastructure in the designated sites, and set a competitive price for electricity and charging fees.

The officials of the ministries of public enterprise and local development as well as the governors of Cairo and Giza will convene again to endorse the final list of sites where electric vehicle charging stations will be installed.
