CAIRO – 30 March 2020: UN Special Envoy to Libya Jan Kubis emphasized the need for the recent transitional authority to implement the obligations entrusted to it and included in the road map.

 

This came during Kubis' visit to the Supreme Judicial Council's headquarters in Tripoli, on Monday, where he was received by the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, his deputy, and members of the council.

 

Kubis also discussed with President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Muhammad al-Hafi, the latest developments in the Libyan political situation.

 

The UN envoy and members of the Council discussed the role of the judiciary in the upcoming elections. Kubis affirmed his admiration for the performance of the Supreme Judicial Council and its preservation of the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.

 

At the end of the meeting, the president of the council handed over the shield of the Supreme Judicial Council in Libya and a certificate of appreciation to the mission for their efforts to establish security and stability in the new Libyan state.

 

While Chairman of the Presidency Council of Libya, Dr. Mohamed Al-Menfi, discussed with his two deputies, Abdullah Al-Lafi and Musa Al-Koni, the formation of a national reconciliation committee, during a consultative meeting held on Monday.

 

According to a statement issued by the Media Office of the Presidential Council, Al-Manfi emphasized the need to expedite the establishment of the committee, to lay the foundations and pillars to achieve a comprehensive national reconciliation that brings together all Libyans.

 

During the meeting, members of the Libyan Presidency Council stressed that achieving a comprehensive national reconciliation that brings together all Libyans remains a top priority for the Presidency Council, as it is an essential element in building a unified civil state.

 

While Minister of Interior in the National Unity Government, Brigadier General Khaled Mazen, during his meeting with UN Envoy to Libya Jan Kubisch, confirmed the ministry's readiness to secure the elections scheduled to take place at the end of 2021 and stressed that it possesses the ability and experience to secure them.

 

The Ministry of Interior of the National Unity Government announced that Mazen welcomed the UN envoy and his accompanying delegation, and expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation for the international efforts made to establish peace in Libya.

 

The Minister of Interior in the National Unity Government reviewed aspects of cooperation with the United Nations Mission, asserting that the Ministry of Interior has a realistic and clear plan, that is progressing well, and creative and leadership efforts are being made to improve security performance and address thorny files.

 

For his part, Kobe expressed his deep thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, congratulating the minister on his recent position, wishing him success, and expressing his desire for continued cooperation between the development program and the ministry.

 

The Ministry of Interior's statement added that the meeting dealt with several topics, the most important of which include training specialized cadres in the field of mine clearance, the ceasefire agreement, opening the coastal road, and providing the appropriate cadres to conduct the electoral process, scheduled to take place in December of this year.

 

The discussion also touched on the issue of illegal immigration and its implications, the importance of expanding cooperation to address it, the importance of building specialized cadres to follow up the human rights file in Libya and the role of the Ministry of Interior in preserving human rights.

 

Moreover, France announced, on Monday, the reopening of its embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, to resume working after a closure that has continued since 2014 for security reasons.

 

The French Embassy in Libya said in a post on Facebook: "The reopening of the French Embassy in Tripoli on March 29, 2021, to work."

 

The French Embassy published photos of the ambassador, accompanied by embassy employees, and diplomatic attaches, in front of the new headquarters of the diplomatic mission in the capital, Tripoli, announcing the opening of the headquarters for work.
